FAQ EMDR

What is EMDR?

EMDR is the abbreviation for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. In German: desensitization and processing through eye movement. This form of psychotherapy was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro (USA) developed. It is suitable for treating the consequences of trauma. This method was developed at the end of the 1980s. The therapy is used in adults as well as children and adolescents. The procedure has been used in Germany since 1991.

The EMDR method has been recognized as scientifically based psychotherapy since 2006. Numerous studies have shown that under treatment with EMDR, 80 percent of patients with a simple post-traumatic stress disorder feel better after just a few therapy sessions.

What are the main areas of application for EMDR?

  • Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Grief after loss experiences
  • Attachment trauma
  • Disruption of the development of children's behavior
  • depressions
  • Anxiety and panic disorders
  • Chronic pain
  • Fatigue syndromes
  • Substance-related addictions (especially in connection with a trauma-related disorder)

How does EMDR work?

Treatment with EMDR is about post-processing the stressful moments and memories. Stimulation takes place in two different ways: You as the patient follow the movement of my fingers with your eyes. As your therapist, I move my hand in different directions. Left, right, up, down, also diagonally. At this moment, your brain is supported to set its own self-healing powers in motion and to process the stressful moments. It is phenomenal what we then experience together.

When does EMDR help?

EMDR is successfully practiced for post-traumatic stress disorders and other consequences of trauma. The method is also effective for depression and anxiety. A high success rate is achieved with the procedure, especially if the development of the disorder is caused by stressful events in life.

These relationships are discussed together in a detailed and detailed anamnesis interview. These stressful memories are then effectively treated with EMDR.
